Shelby County High School Names Powell Miller as New Head Football Coach
Shelbyville, KY – Friday, December 20, 2024 – Shelby County High School is proud to announce the hiring of Powell Miller as its new head football coach, effective immediately. Miller, who currently serves as the District Activities Coordinator at Shelby County Public Schools, brings over a decade of experience in coaching and athletics administration to the position. His extensive background in football and a strong foundation in leadership will be instrumental in driving the program to new heights.
Miller joins Shelby County High School after a distinguished coaching and athletic administration tenure. He also spent 11 years as an assistant football coach at Appalachian State University, Widener University, and Lindsey Wilson College, a program known for its strong tradition of excellence. He is the first SCHS Alumni to hold this position.
"Returning to coaching, especially at my alma mater, feels like coming full circle — it's not just about the game, but about giving back to the community that shaped me, inspiring the next generation to reach their fullest potential both on and off the field."
Miller holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Lindsey Wilson College (2021) and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Louisville (2009). His strong academic background complements his coaching philosophy, emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
“We’re excited to welcome Coach Powell Miller to the Rocket family as our new head football coach,” said SCHS Principal Dr. Carla Kent. “With his extensive coaching experience, leadership, and passion for developing student-athletes on and off the field, we look forward to building a program that exemplifies hard work, discipline, and Rocket pride.”
"Football is more than just a game; it's a family affair. My kids love coming to practice just like I did as a kid and creating an environment that's built on camaraderie is important to me. The support and involvement of parents are crucial in building a strong, united team, but we must work together. Only then can we create an environment where our athletes thrive, both on the field and in life."
SCHS Athletic Director Charlotte Marshall said, “Powell Miller's return home to Shelby County High School and his knowledge and love of the Rockets, being a former standout player himself, as well as former collegiate coach is a huge asset to our program! With his buy-in of blue and gold, he's ready to hit the ground running and continue to build on those relationships he's started with our team during the last half of the season!”
Miller’s appointment begins a new chapter for SCHS Football. Fans, families, and alumni can expect to see a program focused on hard work, discipline, and sportsmanship, as Miller strives to bring out the best in his players both on and off the field.
