Shelby County High School Dress Code
2009-2010
In the interest of promoting a safe, united and orderly learning environment, students are to adhere to the following as it pertains to their daily appearance. All students are expected to adhere to common practice of modesty, cleanliness and neatness and to dress in such a manner as to contribute to the academic atmosphere. Any clothing, object, or writing on clothing that refers to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gangs, sexual innuendos, foul language, or is otherwise disruptive to the educational process is prohibited.
BOTTOMS
Students may wear pants, shorts, capris, skorts, or skirts. These may be dress twill, cargo, chino, or Dockers style only in any color or pattern.
Length of skirts, skorts, and shorts must adhere to the “flamingo rule.”
Tights, leggings, or stockings are allowed under all bottoms.
Must be free of rips and tears.
Must cover midriff and backside at all times regardless of movement.
TOPS
Students may wear any color or patterned long sleeved or short sleeved collared polo/golf style shirt.
A POLO STYLE TOP MUST BE WORN EVERYDAY. The polo must be the outer layer of clothing except when wearing a sweater, sweatshirt or hoodie.
Students may wear any type of undershirt beneath the polo.
Students may only wear a sweater, hooded sweatshirt, or zippered sweatshirt in any solid color over the polo.
Writing on tops is limited to credit card size or smaller.
Students may wear jackets and coats in the classroom at the discretion of the teacher.
FOOTWEAR
Footwear must be worn at all times. No house slippers unless pre-approved by the administration.
ACCESSORIES
No dangerous jewelry such as dog collars, wallet chains, belt chains, spike jewelry, etc. are permitted
Head coverings such as hats, caps, scarves, bandanas, sweatbands, and doo-rags must not be visible from 7:30-3:20 unless such attire is a recognized part of a religious practice adhered by the student or is prescribed by a physician.
Sunglasses are not to be worn or to be visible inside the building unless ordered by a physician
ENFORCEMENT
The school administration shall have the right to evaluate any clothing to determine its acceptability within the guidelines of the dress code. Administrators shall also have the right to make an interpretation on the decency and appropriateness of any garment. Administrators, teachers, and other certified support personnel are responsible for enforcing the dress code. Students will be asked to change the clothing, call home for different clothing, access the Family Resource Center (1st offense only), or be placed in in-school suspension. Repeated offenses will be considered defiance which can result in multiple days of in-school suspension or possible out of school suspension for multiple infractions of defiance.
